Prayer- My Word for 2016

At the beginning of the year, many people chose a word that represent them in this year. My word was prayer.  To be honest, I don’t come close to what I consider a full blown prayer warrior. Don’t get me wrong, I do pray for people often and daily. I have a list of needs that come to me often.  I just believe prayer is something we learn to grow deeper in as time goes by.

Prayer is simply a conversation with God. I talk, he listens. He talks, I listen (well at least try to). It’s easy to talk to God about anything and everything. Listening is a skill which I am still trying to learn. God speaks to us in many different ways. For me I hear him through his Word, songs, dreams, visions and intuition.  My desire is to be able to hear him better and respond when he speaks to me.

I have learnt there are so many different ways to pray. One pray doesn’t fit everyone. We all have different styles of praying. Some pray the liturgy. Others pray by going through prayer stations and visualising their prayers. A few like to sit in silent contemplation. As different as our personalities are, there are differences in how we pray.

Extroverts like to be with people and always on the go. To sit still for long periods of time just talking to God doesn’t quite fit their mould. They can easily pray as they are walking in their neighbourhoods. Prayers can be quick but frequent throughout the day.

Introverts tend to be quieter and energise by being on their own. Praying for long periods of time can come easily and be rather fulfilling.

Creative people enjoy creating pieces of art whilst praying. Knitting prayer shawls is a great idea for this area of prayer. Drawing and painting, sculpting, etc. are other great ways of exploring prayer.

I usually start the day off with prayers of thanksgiving and praise. Then as the day progresses, I pray for people as they come to my mind or I read things on Facebook or emails. I like to pray when I am creating cards or knitting, etc. Sometimes I just like to worship with music. I enjoy praying scriptures as I write them out; I have been through several books of the Bible now.  I also pray short prayers throughout the day depending on what my schedule is like, especially if I have doctors’ appointments.

I still have a long way to grow in my relationship with the Lord.  I desire my prayer life to be more intimate and in time I hope it does. I want to encourage everyone to pray in the way that fits them. Prayer is essential to our relationship with the Lord. It’s as necessary as breathing is to stay alive. Prayer is the key to hearing God. Prayer moves mountains. Prayer is the link between us and heaven. And the greatest part, even if we do not have the words, God knows, he hears, he listens. His Spirit groans within with groans that we cannot understand. The Holy Spirt prays on our behalf. What a blessing and what a mystery.

I close with a poem that I wrote about prayer some time ago.  Keep praying!  Prayer changes things but mostly it changes us.

Prayer (c)

I talk

God listens

God talks

I listen

Some prayers are intense

My mind argues

My soul fights

Letting go of self

Is not easy

But necessary

If I am to go deeper

I talk

God listens

Other prayers are petitions

For friends

Church members

People I know

Others I know just by name

Each one precious

They matter

I talk

God listens

For life

And so much more

Praise flows from my lips

As I praise,

As I pause

I feel the warmth

Of His Holy Spirit

I know as I speak

God is listening

He listens and then He talks…

He speaks in my dreams

He speaks to me through His word

His voice is there

But in order to hear

I have to be quiet.

I listen

God speaks

Into the centre of my being

A whisper

A calm

His voice is sweet

It’s like music to my ears

I am in awe

God, the Creator of the universe

Speaks to me.

Prayer is simple

Yet so confounding

What greater blessing

Is there?

Prayer is relationship

A lifeline

Between Heaven

And me

I talk

God listens

I listen

God talks to me

And I am constantly being changed

Through the power of prayer

  1. Such a lovely post, thank you so much. I was only looking at scripture about prayer today, in trying to prepare for a post…which I plan to be about prayer! I love the ways you describe ways each of us can approach prayer…such a great encouragement. Thank you.

    • Thank you. My scripture I have focused on the past two years is from 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18- Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
I seem to be going backwards with starting with thanksgiving in 2015 then prayer this year. And next year the word is going to be joy.
I am glad we all are different and can talk to God in ways that relate to our own personalities. There is a great book about prayer, not very long either, it’s called Personality and Prayer by Ruth Fowke. I highly recommend reading it to discover what prayer styles may work for you. God bless you xx
