Authority of Christ

God has now revealed to us his mysterious plan regarding Christ, a plan to fulfil his own good pleasure.  And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ- everything in heaven and on earth.  Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance form God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.  -Ephesians 1:9-11

Today’s passage is from my second day of praying scripture from the book of Ephesians.  Verse 10 really spoke to me…”At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ- everything in heaven and on earth.”  As I was praying these words I stopped to think, when have I ever prayed for things here on earth to be found under the authority of Christ?  I honestly never thought about it before.

The Oxford dictionary defines authority as “the power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience.” It also defines it as “The power to influence others, especially because of one’s commanding manner or one’s recognized knowledge about something.”

Jesus has all authority in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18).  He spoke with authority, unlike the scribes of the day (Mark 1:22).  Jesus has authority to forgive sins (Mark 2:10).  This authority was given to Jesus from God.

In our prayers, we can ask God to bring everything under the authority of Christ.  Yes, God is in control.  Jesus already knows everything that is going on.  However, I think there is power in placing everyone we love and everything that matters to us under Christ’s authority.

Just think about it.

If we do this, we will give Christ the power and right to have control over our situations.  We are giving Christ the power to influence what is going on in our lives and our loved ones lives.  We are declaring we know one day everything will be in Christ’s control, under his headship and his reign. We ask as he taught us “May your Kingdom come, may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”  We are essentially saying, Jesus, be Lord of everything!

Paul says we already have an inheritance because we are heirs with Christ. Christ is our brother.  God chose us, and everything will work according to his plan.  Romans 8:29-39 says: “For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.  And having chosen them, he called them to come to him.  And having called them he gave them right standing with himself.  And having giving them right standing, he gave them his glory.”

Can we see what God is saying here?  We are heirs with him.  Because of Christ’s authority to forgive sins, we are cleansed from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).  God sees us as sons and daughters, spotless, without fault, clean.  We are then given his glory!

When we give our lives to the authority of Christ we are forever changed! Within Christ’s authority, we are his family.  We have the glory of God living within us.  The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in us (Romans 8:11)!  We share in his authority!

May everything be under Christ’s authority.  This will be part of my prayers for my friends, family, church, and my own personal life.  I believe great things will happen when I place everything under his authority.  I am excited to think about what lies ahead.
